This has always been our most important event of the year. It's our chance to
show our involvement in the social life at Caltech, proudly represent our
culture, show off our culinary talents and cement our relationship with the
International Student Programs who have over time supported our club on many
occasions.
Our participation in previous years is documented here:

2004 Food Fair 2003
And of course to continue this important tradition we need your participation.
Cooking a traditional meal your family enjoys is the best way to help out, but
we also need volunteers to help serve food to the hungry Techers.
We do have funding from the ISP, so all your expenses will be reimbursed.
Finally, if you need inspiration, there are some recipes that we have collected
here.
If you are cooking something we encourage you to contribute your recipes to be
posted on the website as people often ask us to share our recipes with them. Our
table has always been an enormous success, let's continue the tradition this
year.

Wed, 22 Feb 2006. Marina V. Concert
Beckman Institute Auditorium, 6:30pm, free admission
Russian-born recording artist, singer, pianist and songwriter Marina V
will perform on Wednesday night at Beckman Institute Auditorium.
Born in Russia to a communist nuclear physicist father and a child
psyhologist mother, Marina came to America alone at 15
years old, winning an academic scholarship to attend high school. At 17,
she permanently moved to the USA and started
performing while attending college in Illinois.
Since then, Marina moved to L.A., signed with a world-famous manager
David Krebs (who's managed Aerosmith, Don McLean,
AC/DC, the Scoprions and Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and had her songs
produced by legendary producer, Jack Douglas (John
Lennon, George Harrison, Aerosmith, etc).
Influenced by the Beatles and Tchaikovsky, Marina's music style has been
described as an unusual mix of Tori Amos, Jewel
& Paul McCartney, but "with her unique phrasing, breathless, smoky-sweet
and compelling vocals, she's got a sound all her
own" (Artists Studio Magazine).

Tue, 18 Oct 2005. IFilm movie night:
Zerkalo
From: isp@caltech.edu
On TUESDAY, October 18, at 8PM in the Beckman Institute Auditorium
(room 134, campus building #74), IFilm is pleased to present:
Mirror (Soviet Union, 1975)
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Languages: Russian
Run time: 108 minutes
Synopsis
A semi-autobiographical work, it interweaves poems, dramatic scenes, dreams and newsreels to evoke the inner symbolic world of the protagonist, his nostalgia for the past and his troubled relationships with his wife and mother in the present. At the same time it is a meditation on the nature of Russia, from the nation's role as mediator between the East and West to specific historical events such as the Stalinist purges of the mid-to-late 1930s and World War II. Indeed, few works of art say more about the Russian people with such economy.
More information about the film can be found at
IFilm's website.

Sep 17, 2004. Charitable event in support of Beslan victims
On the first day of the school year, September 1, 2004, terrorists took hostage over one thousand schoolchildren and their parents in a school building in the North Osetian town of Beslan in Russia. The bloody aftermath left over 300 dead and many more wounded, mostly children.
Caltech Russian Club is collecting donations to help the surviving victims of this horrible tragedy. You can donate to the club representatives or electronically. Please show your support and stop by our table outside Red Door Cafe adjacent to the Caltech Bookstore on Friday, Sep 17th, 11 am - 7 pm.
Event poster (created by Liliya Kharevych)
You can help us by printing out and posting the event poster in your buildings, or sending it to your friends.
Donations
We have collected $1793 from 66 donors. Here's a complete list of donations. Please let us know if we accidentally misspelled your name.
At our Sep 29th Board of Directors meeting we decided to send all the money to the International Foundation for Terror Act Victims - a charity that will be distributing money directly to the Beslan victims. The main factor in our decision was the credibility IFTAV has established by carrying out a similar program for the vitctims following a hostage taking in a Moscow theater on October 23, 2002.
The check to IFTAV was sent out on October 12, 2004.
Acknowledgements
First of all we would like to acknowledge all the donors for their donations and support of the victims of the Beslan tragedy. We are touched and overwhelmed by the response of the community. On behalf of all the members of the Caltech Russian Club we extend to you our most heartfelt thank you.
This event would not have been possible without the involvement of many people. The volunteers at the table were Ivan Grudinin, Victor Pikov, Veronica Kondrashov, Sergei Zybin, Olga Shapovalova, Fyodor Kossakovski, Irina Ivanova, Julia Ivanova, Alexei Dvoretskii, Rassul Karabalin, Konstantin Taganov.
Liliya Kharevich designed the poster. The ribbons were made by Ulyana Diudina, Liliya Kharevich, Rogier Braakman and Alexei Dvoretskii. Special thanks to Jim Endrizzi and Athena Trentin at ISP. ISP generously endorsed the event and provided the table and the whiteboard. GSC newsletter editor John Bender helped put the event announcement into the newsletter. Emily Anderson helped put the event announcement in the Caltech Calendar. Jim Endrizzi, Dmitry Kossakovski and Amir Sadjadpour offered good organizational advice.

June 12 - July 04. Euro 2004
We are watching Euro 2004 in Fleming House entertainment room. For those of you who don't know, Fleming is the house by the cannon on the south side of the Olive walk. To get to the ER, enter Fleming house near the cannon. There is a long corridor just to the right of the lounge and the pop machine. The second door on your right should say rooms 3-7, 8-11 (or something like that). Enter this hallway, the ER is the first door on your left. If you can't find it, just ask around and someone will point you in the right direction.
The early game is shown at 9 a.m. and the late game is at 11.45 a.m.
Note that we are collecting $1 a game per person, so that
we can cover some of the cost of buying the Euro 2004 package. The
entire package was around $180 and we have so far collected $52. As I
mentioned before, if there is a deficit after Euro 2004 is over, it will
be covered by Fleming, Soccer club, and Russian club money.
If you do not want to pay for watching the games you have the option of
watching some of the games on the Spanish language Fox Sports cable

13 Aug 2003, New mailing list
In order to improve the efficiency of our mailing list we will
be migrating from a haphazard flat file of addresses (many of which
are obsolete) to ITS provided mailman software.
As a courtesy to the active dues paying members of the club
(http://www.its.caltech.edu/~sovok/members.html) they will
be subscribed to the new mailing list automatically. They will
also have the privileges to post to the list without moderator approval.
The same applies to former club executives who have contributed a lot
to the club in the past. (http://www.its.caltech.edu/~sovok/history.html)
To become an active member of the club by paying the annuals dues of $5
go to http://www.its.caltech.edu/~sovok.
If you are not an active member of the club you can still subscribe to the
list. You postings, however, will be moderated.
To subscribe to the list go to https://utils.its.caltech.edu/mailman/listinfo/rusclub
or follow the maillist link on the club webpage.
The old mailing list will be phased out by the end of August.
These initial list policies may change in the future. Post to the list
by sending email to rusclub@caltech.edu
or contact the club (sovok@its.caltech.edu).

25 Jul 2003, Fund raising
Hello fellow Russian speaking folks,
It's that time of the year when the club needs to make certain
decisions about it's future. We are nearing the Caltech Club funding
application deadline, and we've decided to reorganize.
First of all, to function as a real Club, we need some funds. There
are two ways of getting them - membership dues and Caltech funding.
Most clubs do collect modest yearly dues from their members, and in
an attempt to make our own club more official, we'll be adopting that
practise. Thus, we'll be collecting $5/year dues from each person
who's willing to commit as an active member of the club. This will
hopefully give the club a much needed jump start.
Secondly, we'll be applying for Caltech funding this year. To do
this, we'll need a head count. Therefore, if you are willing to be a
member of this club (i.e. pay the above mentioned dues, which will
result in certain benefits of course :) ), please email us (see
"Contacs" link below). You can pay your dues either in person (to
Alexei or Timofei), or via PayPal donation.
If you are not willing to be a paid member of the club, but would
still like to receive mailing list announcements, don't worry - you
name will remain on the list.
Lastly, if you want to make a suggestion for a club activity in the
2003-2004 year, by all means let us know!
24 Apr 2003. Food Fair
Caltech Russian Club has continued its tradition of proudly representing
our culture at Caltech-wide events with Russian Club table at the International
Food Fair last week. Our borscht, bliny and pirozhki were a huge success.
We also thank the folk singers from the Bay Area who performed
at the Fair and everybody who stopped at our table to give us
encouragement and compliment our cooking.

08 Apr 2003. Sad State of Affairs.
The Russian-speaking Caltech community seems to have diverged and compartmentalized and
the level of activity in 2003 is very low. We did not bother to get any Caltech club
funding in September 2002. If you are a Caltech community member with great ideas on how
to change this situation please identify yourself!
